Summer is awesome. The warm weather means beaches, BBQs, and all round good times.
And to add to the fun this last Summer, Newcastle (the location of Woohoo HQ – where all your wootastic goodness is made) has experienced some absolutely blistering hot days.
We can’t remember another summer with so many days over 40C (or 105F for some of our international warriors). It has been a real sweat box that has verged on the ridiculous and hot weather like this makes people go a little loopy sometimes.
While the heat makes some loopy, it can also make Woohoo go a little lumpy.
It’s a perfectly natural thing that shea butter can do. It’s one of the joys of working with natural ingredients. Just like kids, they like to change behaviour to test us.
Shea butter has high amounts of stearic acid (a fatty acid) which can recrystallise or form lumps when the mercury gets over 35 and then cools back down slowly.
When we make Woohoo, the shea butter is melted everything is mixed and homogenised. The homogenizer blasts all the fat molecules making them really small. We then we cool them down as fast as we can. This doesn’t allow the shea butter’s fatty acid molecules any time to form little balls with the clays and powders and makes your favourite deodorant lurvely and smooth.
Unfortunately when the outside temperature is above 35 degrees, the shea butter warms back up again which can let the little balls start to form. They’re more noticeable (or notice-a-ball bahahah) when there are clays and powders to grab onto.
So if you have a Woohoo that has some little lumps or feels grainy, it has been above 35C and then cooled back down slowly. It’s nothing to worry about as the lumps easily dissolve when rubbed between your fingers.
Your Woohoo has not been damaged or gone off, so there is absolutely nothing to worry about. Phew ;)
If one day you do find you have a lumpy Woohoo and you’re not 100% happy with it, just get in touch with us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll look after you :)
